The 6-Second Rule

Recruiters spend an average of 6 seconds scanning a cover letter. Your opening sentence determines whether they read on.

The Perfect Structure

Opening (2-3 sentences)

Hook them immediately. Mention the specific role, how you found it, and one compelling reason you are the right fit.

Body (2 paragraphs)

Paragraph 1: Your most relevant experience. Pick 2-3 achievements that directly match the job requirements.

Paragraph 2: What you will bring. Focus on value, not what you want from them.

Closing (2 sentences)

Call to action. Express enthusiasm and suggest next steps.

What NOT to Include

  • Your entire CV rewritten in paragraph form
  • "To Whom It May Concern" (research the hiring manager's name)
  • Salary expectations (unless asked)
  • Reasons you left your last job
  • Generic statements that apply to any company
