Recruiters spend an average of 6 seconds scanning a cover letter. Your opening sentence determines whether they read on.
The Perfect Structure
Opening (2-3 sentences)
Hook them immediately. Mention the specific role, how you found it, and one compelling reason you are the right fit.
Body (2 paragraphs)
Paragraph 1: Your most relevant experience. Pick 2-3 achievements that directly match the job requirements.
Paragraph 2: What you will bring. Focus on value, not what you want from them.
Closing (2 sentences)
Call to action. Express enthusiasm and suggest next steps.
What NOT to Include
- Your entire CV rewritten in paragraph form
- "To Whom It May Concern" (research the hiring manager's name)
- Salary expectations (unless asked)
- Reasons you left your last job
- Generic statements that apply to any company
